Root Canal Therapy

(217) 352-4646

Reasons for Root Canal Therapy:

  • Decay has reached the tooth pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth)
  • Infection or abscess have developed at the tip of the root
  • Injury or trauma to the tooth

In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerve, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with medication for a short period, then sealed with special canal dental materials.  Typically, the tooth then requires a crown or 'cap' to prevent the tooth from splitting.

Our doctors will do everything possible to ensure your root canal is painless.  Typically, it is the days prior to a root canal procedure that are the worst for most patients.  As a tooth dies, patients experience many different signs and symptoms:

  • An Abscess (or pimple) on the gums
  • Mild to Severe Sensitivity to hot and/or cold
  • Severe toothache pain
  • Swelling and/or tenderness
  • Rarely, there are no signs or symptoms
